Into The Wild: Set-up Sketch on Temptation

Jeff:  Wow!  This place is perfect.

Laura: Perfect? Really?  No satallite tv—only an i-phone with no coverage.

Cindy:  He’s a big “Man VS Wild” fan

Laura:  Well I hope we don’t have to eat forest beetles and armadillo.

Billy: Oh man! I saw that episode!

Laura:  Could we pulease change the subject?

    Jeff:  No problem.

Billy: I’m hungry what’s for supper?

    Cindy:  Whatever you catch.

Laura:  Cindy, let’s check out the bridge and let the guys cook up an idea or two on their own.

Billy: OK, hopefully you won’t get lost.

Cindy:  If we do I’m sure we’ll do what you guys refuse to do.

    Jeff:  What’s that?

    Both:  Ask for directions.

    (Girls laugh as they exit)

Jeff:  Who do they think they’ll ask?

    Billy: Good Question.

Jeff:  It’s great to get away.

    Billy: Finally.

Jeff:  I can’t remember the last time I was out of cell coverage.

Billy: I think I could get used to this.

    Jeff:  No withdrawal symptoms?

Billy: Not one bit.  It’s amazing how you begin to understand how those devices rule your life.

Jeff:  So who has Nathan?  What is he? 2 years old now?

Billy: Leslie Langley, that college student from the church.

    Jeff:  So how are things?

    Billy: What do you mean?

Jeff:  Last time we talked you and Cindy were kind of going through some rough waters.

Billy: I guess now is as good a time as any to tell you that we’re not going to make it.

    Jeff:  How so?

Billy: Jeff, the marriage has been dead for months and I thought I’d stay in it for the kids but I don’t even think it’s going to be helpful to them for us just to---

Jeff:  Whoa.  Really? It’s that bad?

Billy: No. It’s just not that good.

    Jeff:  Have you considered counseling?

Billy: Why? So I could hear what a failure I am. Look, you don’t understand I--

Jeff:  This is just a lot to take in. Have you decided?

Billy: I have. I just haven’t had the “Big talk.”

    Jeff:  How did this start?

Billy: Marriage is just too hard. And I’m tired of all the disappointments and missed expectations.

Jeff:  You’re talking about your marriage like it’s something you could just trade in like Citigroup stock. It’s not that easy.

Billy: I know.  And I don’t think I have the emotional energy. I just don’t think we were meant for each other.

Jeff:  Meant for each other? Like she’s wasn’t God’s choice for you?

Billy: I’d appreciate it if you’d leave God out of this. The emotional connection’s just not there anymore.

Jeff:  But you know that takes work.

Billy: I just don’t think it should be this hard. Believe me. I have a lot of guilt about it but look at the Dovers. They got divorced and survived and their kids seem to be doing OK.

    Jeff:  You don’t know.

    Billy: Don’t know what?

Jeff:  Nobody knows but I… I don’t know. I guess I just thought it you’d do whatever you had to do to save it.

Billy: I’m just tired. I’m tired of all the expectations. I’m tired of the emptiness of it all.  You know when we were dating we liked the same things. We loved to get outside and do things together. But now she wants to just talk… She talks all the time. And she gets mad about the stupidest things!  There’s just this voice inside me that whispers- go! Leave! Get out while you still have a life. I see this girl at the office and I think, what would it be like if we were together. Or what would it be like if I had a chance to pick somebody else.

    Jeff:  I can’t believe I’m hearing this.

Billy: I knew this was a mistake.  I knew you’d start asking questions and bring me back to..

    (short pause)

    Jeff:  to reality?
