Why change?
Back in September of 2008, we changed our worship schedule to create two distinctly unique worship experiences to reach more people.
This plan worked. We saw so many new faces and God began to use this change to help us become more focused on reaching the lost.
However, the divide we experienced within our church family surprised us. We heard people young and old, new attenders and long-standing attenders say on numerous occasions: "It feels like we're two churches."
This was not our intention. As we moved from spring to summer, God started to speak through his people.
Questions you may have...
What was the decision process?
As a staff we began seriously praying about this as a possibility around January. During this time of prayer, fasting and discussion, people who had no idea about our discussion and prayers began to share with us how the Lord was stirring their hearts to speak to us about the change.
As a staff we made the commitment to pray and return to the discussion often. I estimate that we spent about 24 hours over two months discussing, meeting, praying and talking to leaders.
Our staff presented the proposal to the Vision Team:
Ben Fouts- Chairman of Deacons
Allene Newton- AM LifeGroup Director
Ralph Traughtman- Discipleship Leader
Judy Henry- Worship Team Leader
Mary Ann Mercill- Evangelism Team Leader
Tim McMains- Chairman of the Stewardship Committee
Kathy McManus- Church Accompanist
Bill Waters- Administrative Team Leader
After a two hour meeting where we discussed the proposed change, we voted unanimously to make the change and propose the change to our church leaders. Last night's meeting with church leaders from both services and the Life Groups confirmed to us that this was the right decision at the right time.
Why didn't we have a vote about this change?
We felt that we had a strong consensus with everyone at our meeting last night. No challenges or words were spoken in opposition. Any time we take a vote, someone always seems to lose. The last thing I'd want to do is create division among our leaders.
What will this one worship celebration contain?
A Choir
A Praise Team
A Band
A mixture of old and new songs
A rich time of opening the Bible and learning from God.
Please pray that God will use this change to glorify Him, to unite our church and bridge the generation gap, and bring more people to Jesus.
My prayer is that God will do exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ask or think. I'm proud to be the pastor of BBC but I'm even more proud to be a member of this family of faith.
I hope we can all embrace the change we feel has been led by God. We look forward to the next chapter at BBC. Let's be all in as we allow God to change the world through BBC.
I love you,
Matt Tullos
Pastor
