more than halfway home
Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 03:31PM I’m 45
more than halfway home
I don’t have the patience to be a critic,
an umpire or a judge
satisfied with country club Christianity
with goodness for the sake of vanity
this is my time to tell the truth
my time to live
my time to give
so I don’t have time to play the churchgame
that’s not my intention, it’s not why I came
I’m 45 and I’m through with regret
through with so many things
glitter and glory
through with bitterness
through with formalities
through with politics
through with baggage that I’ve been dragging around since the high school prom and probably longer—
through with formulaic answers
and bitter evenings of regret
because nothing is a given
and not all roads led to Rome
when your 45 and more than halfway home
