    walking with my grandfather

Walking through the woods that day
    In red Louisiana clay
To me, he was a legend then.
So much more than other men.
    One finger gone- a mystery...
    fighting bears ferociously?
    Or riding in Custer’s cavalry?
    Yes, riding with the cavalry.
Though not at all a tallish size,
he towered in my boyish eyes.
His fingers traced an old oak tree
And found the etched words: “MY LUCY
He said he carved them long ago.
He said, “I thought you’d like to know.
One day, you’ll walk among these trees
near croaking toads and buzzing bees
And know I loved Grandma Lucy
Oh yes I loved Maw-Maw Lucy.”

We all loved that ole gal! Fiesty one she was! There are many times as I am cooking supper, I remember watermelon pickles, smothered okra, fried bream, french fried "irish potatoes" and ice tea. The poem started my day with a smile!

Boy do I miss them! I was pointing out Maw-maw in her younger days to Chris (without telling him who she was) and he said "Is that you, mom". Thanks for the memory.
