    We walked...

    tired of all the emptiness
    all the preconceived notions.
i'm speechless, wondering if she perceives things i can't see.
things so hidden that they betray me.
    fading scars are noticable
"Who hurt you?" I ask quietly as we walk together.
"You know them well." Stunned i just stand there wondering who could choose to harm someone so beautiful, I scan the lines of her face for clues.
I didn't ask anything else. we walked in silence.

Those words wouldn't leave---"You know them well."-- and i didn't probe for specifics--too afraid. Afraid of the answers, the names that she would speak, the stories she would tell.

Awkwardly i waited for any small synapse of connection.
Who are you? What's your name?
Looking distantly beyond me, she replied,
    "The Church."
