observations in a meeting yesterday
Friday, February 10, 2006 at 09:52AM in a brainstorming meeting today the thought of a resource based on the baptist faith and message came up. While the baptist faith and message is an important doc. i believe there is something even more basic and historical work that we need to embrace and teach-- the apostles creed. (it's also a little older.)
The BF&M has become something akin to the planks of baptist platform. a litmus test, if you will and a rather ineffective one at that, of what fundamentalists believe. being a wild-eyed, creationist, charismatic fundamentalist myself, i find it rather disconcerting that we feel we must spell out to everybody what the Bible says... But alas i'm not a theologian. i'm sure the higher thinkers have their reasons but i check the gospels not some human document to tell me about my Jesus.

I felt the same several years ago when all of the hype about the Prayer of Jabez came out. Sure, the prayer was important enough to be included in the scriptures - and yes, we can learn some important factors about prayer from it -- but ... if it was THE prayer, and the guide for prayer that we should use -- why didn't Jesus use it as the model prayer during His sermon on the mount?
Sometimes I feel as if we get so focused on the method that we forget the message.
Just a thought!
(Glad to see you blogging, again!)
